Tarec Saffiedine turned heads on the final Strikeforce event by winning their welterweight championship in the promotion’s last fight. He connected with repeat shots to the leg of Nate Marquardt to defeat the former UFC middleweight contender.
Now that Saffiedine has been brought over to the UFC, Dan Henderson thinks he will rise to the top of the division rather quickly.
“His style is very exciting and he doesn’t take guys down and lay on them,” said Henderson on MMA Interviews. “He prefers to stand on his feet and is very technical. He has really good wrestling too. I think he’s going to get right into the mix of top five guys at welterweight in the UFC.”
After going 2-1 on Strikeforce Challengers, Saffiedine made his way to the main roster. He took three straight decisions before he met Marquardt to claim his fourth decision and the championship.
Saffiedine’s only Strikeforce defeat came against Tyron Woodley, who also joined the UFC after Strikeforce held their last show. He won his UFC debut last weekend with a 36 knockout over Jay Hieron.
There is currently no date or opponent for Saffiedine’s UFC debut. Henderson meets Lyoto Machida at the upcoming UFC 157, where the winner moves even closer to a light heavyweight shot.
