“The Grandmaster” Stirs Outrage In China

As MMA continues to gain popularity in the Asian market, the traditional ways of teaching Chinese Kung Fu has morphed. Jiu-Jitsu and Muy Thai have started to change fighter’s style and could be seen in a movie just released.

Award-winning Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai’s newest film, “The Grandmaster” opened yesterday and has caused some outrage in China about the connections between traditional MMA and more modern forms.

The behind-the-scenes documentary shows Kar-wai’s unsuccessful attempt at how old school Kung Fu masters still teach actors the old way, as they still hold a soft spot for the history and discipline they grew up with.
