Vitor Belfort, Josh Barnett, The Ultimate Fighter: The Morning News Roundup – 2.7.13

On Monday night I attended a Continuing Legal Education class on performance enhancing drugs and the legal implications of screening for them in sports. On the panel discussing their perspectives were Nick Lembo, of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, and Dr. Sherry Wulkan, one of the preeminent fight doctors in the business. With the talk covering everything from testosterone use exceptions (TUE) to testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), it was an extremely educational and illuminating class. All of this relates to today’s headlines in a very succinct way – namely, UFC star Vitor Belfort is on the sauce! The news!

• Belfort is actually on TRT, which is a curious thing given his past issues with failed screenings for PEDs. Here’s Zach Arnold of FightOpinion doing his thing. And a word about Arnold: if there’s an issue out there media members are reluctant to touch, he’s the guy who will dive into the mud and grapple with it like an angry Australian crocodile wrestler.

• Josh Barnett isn’t fighting in the UFC anytime soon. Bummer. They sort of need quality heavyweights, and Barnett is one and then some.

• The Ultimate Fighter’s ratings from Tuesday night are dipping. That’s surprising, given how heavily hyped Uriah Hall’s crushing KO was for the past week.

• The UFC is bringing in some more local talent for their upcoming event in London, England. Namely, a new Octagon Girl.
