Ricardo Lamas sent a tweet out asking to challenge Jose Aldo next for the featherweight championshp. Anthony Pettis reached UFC president Dana White first with a text message and was granted the title shot.
“He had to send that text out,” said Lamas to MMA Junkie Radio.
Lamas is coming off a UFC on FOX TKO win over former No. 1 contender Erik Koch. After an injury, Koch lost his title shot. Pettis is coming off a highlight reel knockout over Donald Cerrone on the same card.
That win earned Pettis a crack at the lightweight championship, though he opted to drop to featherweight and cash in his opportunity there. Aldo took a decision over former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 this past weekend.
The UFC revealed Aldo vs. Pettis is targeted for August 3 with no location announced. Lamas was willing to wait the six months to meet Aldo.
“I’ve put in the work at 145 pounds,” said Lamas. “I’ve done everything I need to do and I should be next in line for that shot.”
