Antonio Silva earned respect Saturday night, finishing Alistair Overeem and serving notice that he is a legit UFC heavyweight contender at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar.
After being called out countless times by Overeem during the lead-up to their fight, Silva unloaded in the third round. “Bigfoot” finished the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion with a vicious attack, knocking him unconscious on his feet.
“I waited for the second and third rounds. I know he doesn’t have a lot of cardio or have a good heart,” said Silva, on the Fuel TV post-fight show. “I know he won the first round. He used the ground-and-pound in the second and I said, ‘let’s go, push me harder.’ I know he was going to tire in the third round.”
Silva added that he “talked a lot of (expletive) about me. In the press conference, I said to him, ‘hey, I make you respect me.'”
Silva’s fate in the UFC heavyweight rankings will be determined shortly. Overeem was expected to face UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez had he defeated Silva.
