Jose Aldo earned a decision victory in the first super-fight of 2013, taking down former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in the main event of UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar Saturday night.
Despite not being able to earn another finish, Aldo did enough in the eyes of the judges to earn his 15th consecutive victory and successfully defend his UFC featherweight title.
“This was a very difficult fight,” said Aldo, who improved to 22-1 in his career. “I knew I had to work step-by-step to get the victory.”
Despite having issues with cutting to 145 pounds in the past, Aldo seemed to state he planned to remain in the division, adding, “if I can make the weight, I will continue to fight at this weight class.”
Aldo landed 13 more strikes and fended off nine takedown attemps by Edgar, who lost another close decision for the third straight time. He was defeated twice by Benson Henderson in 2012.
