Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia

A pair of welterweights who have competed for UFC gold enter the Octagon, as Jon Fitch (27-4-1) takes on Demian Maia (17-4). Fitch righted his ship with a win over Erick Silva to close out 2012, while Maia is 2-0 since moving down from middleweight. The referee in charge will be Kim Winslow.

Round 1: Maia goes immediately for the takedown, getting it and working quickly to the back. Fitch stands up with Maia locked on his back, getting a triangle on his body. Maia throwing punches to try and find an opening. Going on two minutes of Fitch holding Maia on his back, defending any submission attempt. Fitch breaks Maia down and he is off his back but still holding him with a bodylock, before tripping him to the mat. Fitch quickly stands up, and Maia releases the hooks this time. Fitch grabs the fence twice, and Maia is throwing knees to the body. Maia on the back, breaking Fitch down – a spot we have been at since the start of the round.

Round 2: Maia cuts off the Octagon, and Fitch goes to work with the kicks. Nice power kick to the lead leg of Maia, and head kick is blocked. Maia with a single-leg takedown and he gets Fitch to his back. Fitch gets back and avoids any damage or submission attempts this time. Maia with another takedown and he goes to the back, locking in a hook. Maia looking for a possible armbar with just over two minutes left. Maia has a neck-crank in, but Fitch breaks it for now, though a body triangle remains locked in. This is some serious submission defense for Fitch, as Maia has finished people with ease once he’s gotten into this position.

Round 3: Maia goes right for the takedown, locking Fitch up against the cage. Maia takes the back and begins breaking him down, locking the hooks back in. Ten of the first 11 minutes of this fight have seen Maia holding Fitch down and working for a submission. Fitch slips out and gets to his feet as we go under three minutes. Fitch grabs a guillotine as Maia goes to his back, and he’s now looking to work a little ground-and-pound. Back to their feet and Maia has the back once again. Fitch has 90 seconds to try and finish this fight. Maia drops and grabs a single-leg, scoring another takedown without much defense – his fifth of the match.
