Joseph Benavidez landed more strikes and controlled more of the 15 minutes of his match with Ian McCall Saturday night, scoring a decision victory at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar.
Benavidez, who lost to Demetrious Johnson last year in the finals of the UFC flyweight championship tournament, connected on 62 of his 189 strikes, including 57 significant strikes, to keep McCall winless inside the Octagon.
“My last fight was close, but Ian was just as tough,” Benavidez said. “It was an awesome fight. I think the judges got it right.”
McCall entered the UFC as a favorite to fight for the UFC flyweight title, but suffered a loss to Johnson via decision. The two had previously fought to a draw after a scoring error was made.
While nothing has been confirmed as far as Johnson’s next opponent goes, Benavidez did say “if there’s a world title there, I’m going for it.”
Benavidez helped his cause in the third, throwing 78 strikes to just 33 by McCall. “Uncle Creepy” did score with a takedown, the only one in the match.
