Tyron Woodley got the taste of defeat out of his mouth in impressive fashion Saturday night, stopping Jay Hieron in 36 seconds at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar. The win came in the Octagon debut for Woodley.
Woodley (11-1) suffered his first career loss last year in Strikeforce, as Nate Marquardt claimed the vacant welterweight title by finishing him. This time, it was Woodley doing the finishing.
After storming the gates, Woodley caught Hieron and followed up, unloading several big blows after taking his back. Once Woodley mounted Hieron, it was all over, as he caught him with a right that knocked him cold.
“It feels amazing,” Woodley said. “I wanted to come in and make a statement. This year is mine.”
The 30-year-old Woodley, who wrestled at the University if Missouri before embarking on an MMA career, earned his first knockout victory of his career.
