UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will have both eyes geared on the Octagon this evening at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar. That’s because his next contender could appear from the card.
Alistair Overeem has been told he will receive a shot at the belt should he defeated Antonio Silva in one of the main card bouts. Overeem is returning from an extended break due to a suspension.
Velasquez, who won back the title by defeating Junior dos Santos to close out 2012, offered up his pick in the Overeem-Silva bout while appearing on MMAjunkie.com Radio recently.
“I think (Overeem will) win,” Velasquez said. “I think ‘Bigfoot’s’ a tough dude, also, but Overeem definitely has a great chance.”
Velasquez defeated Silva last year to secure his shot at the UFC title after Overeem was removed from the picture. Dos Santos faced Frank Mir, and won, instead of Overeem for his first title defense.
Should Silva pull the upset, though, it could leave a cloud above the No. 1 contender spot in the division. Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve have each put together strong wins, and both are currently scheduled for matches in early 2013.
“I don’t know (what happens if Overeem doesn’t win),” Velasquez said. “Maybe (Nelson or Struve). We’ll see what the UFC decides and see what happens with this fight. I really haven’t thought about who it will be if Overeem doesn’t win.”
