The betting world has Joseph Benavidez as a slight favorite when he meets Ian McCall later in the evening. For McCall, he loves being the underdog as it motivates him and helps his friends out.
“I always enjoy being the underdog because I have a bunch of degenerate gambler friends,” said McCall on Verbal Submission. “I’m still sure I’ll go out there and knock Joe out. If I can make my friends money and have fun with it, that makes it even better.”
McCall spent last year competing in the flyweight tournament to crown the first champion. After going to a draw to current champion Demetrious Johnson, “Uncle Creepy” failed in the rematch. Benavidez lost to Johnson in the finals of the tournament.
Since the division is still small, the winner of this fight might become the new No. 1 contender.
McCall vs. Benavidez opens tonight’s UFC 156 main card. It takes place from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.
