If Alistair Overeem is able to take care of Antonio Silva Saturday night at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar, his next fight will be for the UFC heavyweight championship.
UFC president Dana White confirmed the possible title match for Overeem during media day on Thursday. Overeem (36-11) will be competing for the first time since late in 2011, as he was suspended early last year for a failed pre-fight drug test.
Overeem, the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, was lined up to meet Junior dos Santos for the belt before failing the test. He defeated Brock Lesnar in his UFC debut in December of 2011.
Silva (17-4) is looking to even his UFC mark to 2-2 with an upset win over Overeem. “Bigfoot” lost to current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez last year, but rebounded to defeat Travis Browne in his most recent fight.
