Dana White, Bellator, Shonie Carter: The Morning News Roundup – 2.1.13

Two things happened yesterday that created the bulk of the news for the cycle: one was the UFC 156 media day in Las Vegas, the other was Bellator 87 in Michigan. At the presser in Vegas, UFC president Dana White rapped about Randy Couture and a new fighter-rankings partnership with FightMetric, and at Bellator, four lightweight tournament quarterfinalists got their butts kicked. This, my friends, is your news:

• As per MMAWeekly, White is glad that Couture signed a deal with SpikeTV, because now it means he won’t have to deal with him anymore. Here’s a video of the media scrum. About these new fighters rankings, it seems a select 90 media members will be allowed to vote on the candidates. Zach Arnold has a problem with that.
David Rickels and Lloyd Woodard headlined last night’s Bellator installment, and they did not disappoint in terms of action. It will be curious to see if they were able to carry the promotion’s strong ratings.
• Did you know MMA legend Shonie Carter has officially hung up the gloves?
