Joseph Benavidez gets an awkward feeling when he hits the stage at 125 pounds as he feels small at that weight. UFC president Dana White recently revealed that there are plans to create a 115 pound strawweight division in the future, but Benavidez wants nothing to do with it.
“I’ll have nothing to do with 115 [pounds],” said Benavidez on MMA Junkie Radio. “If they want to do that, whatever. At least I won’t be the tiny guy, I guess. That’s a plus.”
There’s no exact time for when the UFC will introduce strawweight fighters.
Benavidez cut down from bantamweight to flyweight in 2012 to take part in a four person tournament to crown the inaugural champion. He was defeated by the winner and current title holder Demetrious Johnson.
This weekend, on February 2, Benavidez returns at UFC 156 to meet Ian McCall. The winner might be next to get a title shot in a roster that has few names.
