UFC 156: A Breakdown Of The Main Card

Flyweight: Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall
The flyweight division is still new to the UFC and this one could determine who earns the next title shot. Joseph Benavidez failed in his last fight, where the inaugural championship was determined. Ian McCall is also familiar with champion Demetrious Johnson. They fought to a draw and then a decision loss for McCall over the summer.

Welterweight: Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
A fight between former No. 1 contenders Jon Fitch and Demian Maia is the only welterweight fight on the card. Fitch recently picked up his first win since 2010. After Maia lost to top middleweights Mark Muñoz and Chris Weidman, he has dropped to welterweight. He took two wins last year going 2-1.

Heavyweight: Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
Two powerhouse hitters here, in Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva. Overeem will likely rely on his feet for power as Silva uses his hands. Overeem is coming off a suspension that cost him his shot at the heavyweight championship. Silva earned his first UFC win over Travis Browne in the fall. His other loss came from current title holder Cain Velasquez.

Light Heavyweight: Rashad Evans vs. Antônio “Minotouro” Nogueira
In the co-main event, Rashad Evans will look to get back in the top of the light heavyweight division after losing to Jon Jones. It was his second chance to win the title and ended his four fight win streak. After two losses, Nogueira defeated UFC hall of famer Tito Ortiz in his last appearance in 2011.

Featherweight Championship: José Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar
After years of convincing and two recent title fight losses, Frankie Edgar makes his anticipated cut to featherweight. He dropped his lightweight title and the rematch that followed in 2012. José Aldo has been unstoppable since he joined the UFC. Aldo won his eight fights in the WEC and their gold in the process. Since the title joined the UFC roster, Aldo is coming off an additional three wins. This fight was originally set for October at UFC 153, but a motorcycle accident to Aldo a month out pushed it to this weekend.
