The ongoing saga about whether or not the UFC wants Strikeforce heavyweight Josh Barnett continues. UFC president Dana White revealed that the two sides are currently working on a contract.
“We’re talking to Josh Barnett right now,” said White on UFC Tonight. “Yes, we’re open to bringing him into the UFC. It’s about making a deal now.”
After Strikeforce folded, Barnett was not on the list of names that would be joining the UFC.
Barnett is no stranger to the UFC and controversy. It was over a decade ago he last competed under their name. After winning the UFC heavyweight championship, he was stripped of it for banned substances during a post-fight drug test and hasn’t appeared for them since.
After that, Barnett would compete in several organizations which included PRIDE, DREAM and Strikeforce. He had an eight fight win streak going, before Daniel Cormier snapped it last year. Barnett came back with a submission over Nandor Guelmino early in round one on the final Strikeforce card.
Earlier in the week, Barnett posted on his Facebook account that he was interested in a UFC return.
