New UFC Tonight host Chael Sonnen didn’t waste anytime before making waves, calling for Frankie Edgar to upset Jose Aldo at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar this weekend. The two meet for the UFC featherweight title.
“I think Edgar is too fast for him. I think he can out-box him, out-wrestle him and – should he need to – out-condition him,” Sonnen said. “I’m taking an upset. I’m taking Frankie Edgar to become the world champion once again. I think they’re going to go 25 minutes and I think it’s going to be a fantastic thing to watch.”
Aldo (21-1) has already successfully defended his UFC title three times, defeating Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian and Chad Mendes. He has not lost since 2005 and is widely considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
“The story here is that Frankie is battle tested,” Sonnen added. “He’s beaten world champions like Sean Sherk. He beat a world champion in BJ Penn. A lot of people think Edgar should still be the champion.”
Edgar (15-3-1) dropped down from lightweight after a pair of 2012 losses to Benson Henderson. He won the belt from Penn back in 2010, and earned another win over Penn in a rematch a few months later.
