Jon Jones has talked about moving up to heavyweight to test to his skills against larger opponents. While there is no date set in stone, Jones hinted that it could happen before the year ends.
“I think heavyweight is going to come along around 2014, maybe even late this year,” said Jones during a UFC Q&A. “Who knows. It’ll definitely be a fight for the fans.”
Jones has dominated the UFC since joining the light heavyweight division with 11 wins. The only loss was a disqualification to Matt Hamill due to illegal strikes. Jones was winning before the referee called the fight. With four title defenses, Jones is one win away from tying the division’s record of five. He attempts that when he fights Chael Sonnen.
As for his heavyweight debut, Jones wants to fight former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.
Jones vs. Sonnen headlines UFC 159 from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The card is set for April 27.
