Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem wants nothing more than to make a statement in his return to the Octagon this Saturday night. Overeem, who has not competed since late in 2011, faces Antonio Silva at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar.
The bout is likely a No. 1 contender match to the UFC heavyweight title – a position Overeem has been in before. Last year, “The Reem” was scheduled to meet Junior dos Santos for the belt, but he failed a pre-fight drug test.
A nine-month suspension and several further drug tests followed, and now, Overeem is anxious and ready to return to action – though he doesn’t plan to be in for a long evening Saturday.
“The fight will end within one or two rounds,” Overeem said. “I want to finish him in the first round. I have the power to knock (Silva) out for a long, long time.”
Overeem and Silva were originally set to meet in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, but Overeem opted out of the event.
