Demetrious Johnson knew what to expect when he reached the “championship rounds” of his UFC flyweight title match with John Dodson Saturday night at UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Dodson. Those experiences are what helped “Mighty Mouse” secure the decision victory.
“Going five rounds with Dominick Cruz, Joseph Benavidez; that stuff has all helped me earn my belt,” said Johnson, during the post-fight show on Fuel TV. “And now going five rounds with a guy who is close to my speed helps me out a lot. That’s the stuff that other guys have to look forward to when they fight me.”
Dodson stunned Johnson early in the fight, catching him several times on counters and flooring the champion. Johnson said he “got dazed,” but added “I’ve been dazed before and I just dug deep. It’s going to happen.”
The flyweight division is still growing in the UFC, so the list of contenders for Johnson is short at the moment. Benavidez and Ian McCall are set to square off in the near future, and could determine the next challenger.
“I’m just a hard worker and I know I have a lot of stuff to improve on,” Johnson said. “What’s next for me is to go home, relax, work on my knockout power, work on my clinch game, and work on everything.”
