Ed Soares, the manager for UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, doesn’t believe a bout with Chris Weidman would do any good for his fighter. That doesn’t mean Soares isn’t thinking outside the box in regards to a potential challenger.
“Cung Le is coming off of three wins or something like that where he’s got a little bit of a name,” said Soares, during a recent interview with Cage Fanatic. “I mean, it’s really hard in that division because it’s so evenly matched. All the opponents, on any given day, one of those guys can beat the other.”
Le, a former Strikeforce champion, has defeated Patrick Cote and Rich Franklin since suffering a loss in his Octagon debut to Wanderlei Silva. His name carries quite a bit of weight, especially internationally, as he has been featured in several movies.
Silva appears to be targeting a return to action this spring after defeating Chael Sonnen and Stephan Bonnar in late 2012.
Weidman has been pushing for a match with “The Spider” since finishing Mark Munoz. The unbeaten former NCAA wrestler missed the latter half of the year due to an injury.
