Erik Koch had two scheduled matches in 2012 with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo receive the boot. First, it was Aldo who exited the scheduled match with an injury. Later in the year, Koch himself went down with an injury of his own.
Now, having not competed since 2011, Koch is finally set to fight again, taking on Ricardo Lamas this Saturday night at UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Dodson.
Since his exit from the fight, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar has stepped in and become the next contender to face Aldo. However, it appears as if the Lamas-Koch winner could make a strong case to fight for the belt after that bout, though that is of little concern to Koch.
“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in 2012,” said Koch, during a press conference Thursday. “I am just worried about fighting. I am excited to get back in there. Of course, I want a title shot, but I am just going to do my work Saturday and see where it goes after that.”
Koch (13-1) defeated Jonathan Brookins in his last fight, which took place in September of 2011. He has posted four wins in a row since a loss to Chad Mendes in the WEC.
