Cheick Kongo has an opponent in mind for his next fight. Now, Kongo just needs to wait and see if his bosses in the UFC agree.
Kongo, who defeated Shawn Jordan in 2012 to improve to 18-7-2, has targeted Roy Nelson. “Big Country” is coming off a recent victory over Matt Mitrione that pushed his overall career record to 18-7.
“Let me fight (Nelson) at UFC on Fox 7,” Kongo posted on Twitter recently. “3 months until now. Perfect for (a) good training camp.”
Kongo likely views a bout with Nelson as an opportunity to push his way closer to the top of the heavyweight division rankings. He was asked to step in on short notice and face Nelson in December after an injury knocked Shane Carwin out, but Kongo declined the fight.
Nelson, meanwhile, is on a two-fight win streak, having also toppled Dave Herman in 2012. His last loss came at the hands of Fabricio Werdum.
UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez is set for April 20 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
