At last week’s Bellator 86 conference call, welterweight champion Ben Askren (10-0) said that Karl Amoussou (16-4-2) would tire out in the first five minutes of their five round fight. Amoussou wasn’t fazed by the comment and thinks the fight won’t even last a full minute.
“I don’t think the fight will last five minutes anyways so he shouldn’t worry,” said Amoussou to MMA Mania. “My last fight was only 56 seconds and I’m pretty sure I can beat Askren in a shorter time than that. He should not be worried about me being done in five minutes because the fight will be over before that.”
Amoussou was referencing his submission win over Bryan Baker in the finals of the Summer Series tournament. Before claiming that tournament, Amoussou earned another submission win in the quarterfinals against Chris Lozano and a split-decision over David Rickels in the semifinals.
Askren first appeared for Bellator when he won their Season 2 tournament. He remains undefeated after one non-title fight and two successful defenses of his gold. Six of his seven Bellator wins have gone to a decision. Amoussou is 4-1 out of Bellator and his only loss comes from his debut for them.
The two headline Bellator 86 tonight, January 24, from the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, OK. The preliminary action streams at Spike.com at 8 p.m. ET and the main card can be seen at 10 p.m. ET on Spike TV.
