Douglas Lima (22-5) only lost once in his Bellator career at the hands of welterweight champion Ben Askren (10-0). It was Askren’s second successful title defense.
In 2011, Lima made his Bellator debut in the Season 5 welterweight tournament. Lima entered the tournament after winning six fights in a row, which included three wins out of MFC, where he won their welterweight title. He took a decision win over Steve Carl, and then knocked out Chris Lozano and Ben Saunders to earn a shot at the gold. Askren took a decision win to retain his championship.
Heading into his opening round fight in the Season 8 tournament against Michail Tsarev (24-3), Lima knows he has to be more intense so he can stop his fights.
“I’m just a fighter looking for the throat,” said Lima. “I’m always out there trying to win and to finish. I hope the fans see that.”
Of Lima’s 22 career wins, 12 have come by way of submission. Since joining Bellator, he has not submitted any of opponents. He’ll look to change that when he meets Tsarev, who is 1-1 for Bellator, later today.
Bellator 86 airs tonight with Lima vs. Tsarev on the main card from the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, OK. Spike TV will air the main card, starting at 10 p.m. ET.
