Johny Hendricks expected to be cashing in his shot at the UFC welterweight title already. Instead, he will be facing Jake Ellenberger at UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz.
Despite being called the No. 1 contender by UFC president Dana White following a win over Martin Kampmann last year, Hendricks was passed over by Nick Diaz. St-Pierre pushed for the Diaz bout, as the two had a pair of previously scheduled encounters cancelled before they reached the Octagon.
White, however, said during a press conference Wednesday to promote the March card in Montreal that with a win over Ellenberger, Hendricks is “probably” the next challenger to the title.
Hendricks (14-1) has won five straight since a decision loss to Rick Story in 2010. He has topped Kampmann, along with former No. 1 contender Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch.
