UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre pushed hard to face Nick Diaz because he felt that the former Strikeforce champion was the most deserving contender. The two will square off in March from Montreal at UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz.
Many believed it would be Johny Hendricks to face St-Pierre this year, but the Canadian didn’t believe Hendricks should be considered the No. 1 contender despite a recent win over Martin Kampmann.
“I watched (Hendricks) fight with Josh Koscheck, and I believe that Josh Koscheck should have won that fight, and I don’t want to fight someone that lost to a fighter I beat,” said St-Pierre, during a press conference on Wednesday. “For me, Nick Diaz is the No. 1 contender. He has proven himself many times before. This is the fight Nick wanted to have, I wanted to have, and people wanted to see the most.”
St-Pierre personally asked the UFC to pair him with Diaz, adding that the two had twice before been scheduled to face each other. Hendricks will be facing Jake Ellenberger on the same card, which is set up as a welterweight tournament with three 170-pound bouts to be featured.
