Despite being called out by Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen conducted himself in a professional manner while appearing alongside UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz on the Fuel TV post-fight show for UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping Saturday night.
Both Sonnen, who will meet Jon Jones in April for the UFC light heavyweight title, and Cruz offered up their take on who Belfort should fight next after defeating Michael Bisping.
“Vitor is a tremendous problem. He can beat guys in multiple weight classes,” Sonnen said. “He might be the No. 1 contender at 185, although he’s not going to get the chance again. What do you do with him? I think he should take on the winner of Yushin Okami vs. Hector Lombard.
Sonnen was referencing the fact that Belfort was knocked out in the opening moments of his last meeting with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. UFC president Dana White has said in the past that “The Phenom” is not in line for a rematch.
As for Cruz, he mentioned Chris Weidman, saying, “Vitor presents a lot of problems for him. He’s a well-rounded striker with tons of experience. He can stuff Weidman’s takedowns.”
Okami and Lombard are set to meet in March at UFC on Fuel TV: Silva vs. Stann. Weidman is currently rehabbing an injury that knocked him out of a December meeting with Tim Boetsch.
