Former UFC heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga made quick work of Ben Rothwell Saturday night, turning in a second round submission in his native country of Brazil. The bout was part of the UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping main card from Sao Paulo.
Gonzaga (14-6) was released by the UFC following a pair of 2010 losses, but was granted another chance after a victory on the regional circuit. He has not disappointed, scoring submission wins in Brazil.
“I started training more jiu-jitsu, but I did not forget about my striking ability,” Gonzaga said.
Gonzaga previously fought Randy Couture for the UFC title, but was defeated via TKO in 2007. He went just 3-4 after the loss to Couture, prompting his release.
Since returning, though, Gonzaga has flashed the same kind of skills that helped him climb the UFC ladder, locking in a rear-naked choke against Ednaldo Oliveira last January. He picked Rothwell apart on his feet in the first Saturday, before landing a right and scoring the guillotine choke in the second.
