Ronny Markes vs. Andrew Craig

To the middleweight division we head next, as Ronny Markes (13-1) meets Andrew Craig (8-0). Marc Goddard will be the third man inside the Octagon.

Round 1: Lot of jockeying for position early on. Neither fighter seems real sure of themselves or the distance, so we head to the fence and the clinch game. Markes grabs a leg and takes Craig down, but Craig quickly pounces back up. Markes with a body lock, which appears to be the move of favorite tonight. Markes picks up Craig and slams him to the canvas, forcing Craig to quickly work to the fence and begin his journey back to his feet. Markes rolls to his side, and is looking to lock in a rear-naked choke. Craig, calmly, breaks the move, but is still in a bad position with Markes on his back and looking for the submission.

Round 2: Not a lot of striking again to start this round. Markes shoots for a single-leg, and gets it, taking Craig back to his back. Markes doesn’t allow Craig to try to wall-walk again this time, moving him towards the center. Markes, in half-guard, looking for a kimura with three minutes left. Markes passes, and Craig is fighting to get out of the submission. Craig frees his arm, but Markes takes his back with two minutes remaining. The Brazilian crowd is getting after their own, growing restless with this wrestling match. Craig gets free and they square off in the center. Big punch misses by Craig, as Markes is making him chase. Another big right misses by Craig and the round end.

Round 3: Craig finally gets Markes to his back after two minutes of clinching between the two. Craig moves to a better position, peppering the body with lefts. Craig in half-guard, likely feeling as though he needs a finish to win the match. Markes is not allowing Craig to pass as we head under two minutes. Craig shouts to his corner, “should I go for something?” To which Kenny Florian answers, “yes.” One minute left, and Craig is landing elbows inside the guard. Craig asks for Markes to stand up, and delivers a flying knee, but Markes scores a takedown and will likely have his hand raised.
