UFC Officials Confirm Alexander Gustafsson-Gegard Mousasi For Sweden Card

Alexander Gustafsson will return to his home country of Sweden for his next match, taking on former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi on April 6. The event is expected to be a Fuel TV card from the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm.

Gustafsson (14-1) has won six straight fights since a 2010 submission loss to Phil Davis. “The Mauler” closed out 2012 with a decision victory over former UFC 205-pound champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, vaulting himself to the top of the list in terms of contenders.

However, with the UFC light heavyweight title tied up until April when Jon Jones defends against Chael Sonnen, the 26-year-old Gustafsson decided to not wait around to fight again.

“Alexander Gustafsson is a big star in Sweden and has quickly grown in popularity worldwide thanks to his success in the Octagon,” UFC executive vice president Garry Cook said. “We know the fans in Sweden will make the Ericcson Globe Arena an absolutely electric atmosphere as he takes on the very talented Gegard Mousasi.”

Mousasi (33-3-2) did not compete for the duration of 2012 after surgery to repair a torn ACL, but returned earlier this month to defeat Mike Kyle via first round submission. The 27-year-old will be making his Octagon debut, and is unbeaten in his last six fights.
