Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren is a well-decorated wrestler. This Thursday night, that will be put to the test when he defends his title against Karl Amoussou at Bellator 86 on Spike TV.
Askren (10-0), who won two NCAA Div. I championships and gold medals at the Pan American and U.S. Championships, has caught a lot of attention for his lack of finishes inside the cage. That doesn’t bother him, though, and isn’t planning on letting it change his style either.
“Wrestling’s my background and always will be,” said Askren, during a conference call on Friday. “I’m never gonna change my style. I am who I am, and I’m not afraid to be that guy.”
Of his 10 victories, six have come via decision, including each of Askren’s last six inside the Bellator cage. The former University of Missouri standout wants his critics to know “come next Thursday, the fans will be disappointed again because there’s no way that belt isn’t leaving with me.”
