Championship fights usually take place at the end of cards, but Bellator is breaking away from the norm for tonight’s show, when featherweight champion Pat Curran (17-4) defends his title against Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (17-1) in the opening main card bout. For Curran, he has no complainants about his spot on the card.
“It’s awesome,” said Curran (17-4) at Tuesday’s open workouts. “I’ll be the first fight on the main card, the first televised fight. I want to go out and put on a good fight. Bjorn [Rebney] and Bellator made the right decision making this the first fight, they know it’s going to be exciting. All we have to do is go out there 100 percent and see where it goes from there.”
The featherweight title fight starts off the main card and is followed by Renato Sobral vs. Mikhail Zayats in one of the several opening round fights for the Season 8 light heavyweight tournament. The main event features Michael Chandler putting his lightweight title on the line against Rick Hawn.
Bellator 85 airs tonight, as it makes its debut on Spike TV. It comes from the Bren Center in Irvine, CA with the main card starting at 10 p.m. ET. Spike.com will stream the preliminary fights.
