Now that Luke Rockhold has signed to compete in the UFC, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion needs an opponent. Rockhold recently suggested Costa Philippou for his debut, and even has a date in mind.
“I think Costa Philippou makes the most sense right now,” Rockhold said, in an interview with MMAFighting.com. “He’s coming off a win, and I think he’s a good opponent. Let’s get it on at (UFC on Fox 7).”
The card already features a pair of UFC vs. Strikeforce fights, as the main event boasts Benson Henderson meeting Gilbert Melendez for the UFC lightweight title. UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez takes place April 20 and boasts a co-main event of Daniel Cormier-Frank Mir.
Rockhold (10-1) has been on the sidelines for the ladder half of 2012 due to an injury. He successfully defended his belt against Keith Jardine and Tim Kennedy, and has won nine in a row.
Philippou (12-2) scored the biggest win of his career to close out 2012, besting Tim Boetsch. He is a on a five-fight win streak.
