Tim Kennedy (15-4) looks back at 2012 and is disgusted with what has become of MMA. He had some advice for fighters who use banned substances, as he believes they are ruining what the sport represents.
“Stop cheating, it’s martial arts,” said Kennedy to MMA Fighting. “The sport was based on honor, integrity, doing the right thing and ethics. That’s what martial arts is; Treat the sport what it is.”
The past year saw several top names being handed anywhere from six months to one year suspensions for failed drug test. Just some of the top names included Jake Shields, Thiago Silva, Stephan Bonnar, Dave Herman, Nick Diaz and Alistair Overeem. Silva, Herman and Diaz tested positive for marijuana. It was the second time Herman and Diaz tested positive. Bonnar and Overeem came back positive for steroids. Shields’ results were not revealed due to HIPAA rules in Colorado.
Joey Beltran and Rousimar Palhares are the most recent to fail drug test after competing at UFC on FX 6 in December.
Kennedy, who has never failed a drug test, is coming off a third round submission win over Trevor Smith (10-3) at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine this past weekend.
Kennedy has not been offered a UFC contract yet and will be disappointed if the promotion decides to not sign him. He also noted that he fights because he loves it and money is not a factor.
