UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson wants to end any and all discussion about who is the best 155-pound fighter in the world. Henderson, who recently defended his title against Nate Diaz, signed an eight-fight agreement with the UFC, and hopes Gilbert Melendez is his next opponent.
Melendez, the current Strikeforce lightweight champion, is expected to come over to the UFC now that Strikeforce has closed its doors. “El Nino” has not competed since early in 2012 when he defeated Josh Thomson.
“We really like the Gilbert Melendez fight, and I’ll tell you why” Gilbert Melendez has been ranked either No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 between himself, Frankie Edgar and Benson. Frankie was considered No. 1 in the world, and Benson beat him. Now, some people are saying Gilbert might be No. 1 in the world. Well, Benson would like to beat him, too, and leave no doubt that he is the best 155-pounder in the world,” said Malki Kawa, the manager for Henderson, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com.
Henderson (18-2) has not lost since entering the UFC, compiling a 6-0 mark. That includes two decision victories over Edgar, a decision win over Diaz and a triumph vs. Clay Guida.
“We’re really interested in fighting Gilbert Melendez, and we’ve got the confidence that the UFC will make that fight happen,” Kawa added. “Right now, we’re just happy to have this contract done, and we’re going to sit back and hope this is the fight they give us. It’s the top two lightweight fighters in the world at this point. It needs to happen.”
