Many have questioned UFC president Dana White’s decision to have Chael Sonnen (27-12-1) be next in line for a light heavyweight championship shot against Jon Jones (17-1). When questioned, Pride veteran Wanderlei Silva’s (34-12-1-1 NC) take was whatever White says goes, but thought the fight would be lopsided.
“It was a fight I wanted to see, [but] Jones will swallow Sonnen,” said Silva to Sherdog. “I spoke with Jones and told him that he can win the fight only with jabs, with one hand tied behind his back.”
Jones and Sonnen recently finished coaching on opposite teams for The Ultimate Fighter. They will meet at UFC 159 from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on April 27. It will be the first time in over a decade that Sonnen fights as a light heavyweight. He has spent a majority of his career in the middleweight division, but after failing twice to win the title from Anderson Silva (33-4), decided to make the move up a weight class.
Wanderlei also shared his take on who can stop Jones.
“The only person who can beat Jones today is Anderson [Silva],” said Wanderlei.
Later this year, Wanderlei meets Brian Stann (12-5) in the main event of UFC on FX 8 on March 3. It will be the UFC’s return to Japan when they fight out of the Saitama Super Arena.
