Due to the HIPAA policy, Jake Shields’ (27-6-1-1 NC) suspension for a banned substance was not made public. Ed Herman (20-8-1 NC), who Shields fought before the suspension was announced, believes that it involves some kind of PED and not any recreational drug.
“I can’t guarantee it, but I’m pretty positive that it was for some kind of performance enhancing drug,” said Herman to Bloody Elbow. “If it really was for marijuana, it’s a lot easier for a guy to come right out and say, ‘I smoked a joint, sorry.’ You get a little less criticism that way than if you cheated and used a performance enhancer.”
Shields has not gone public about what he tested positive for.
At UFC 150, Shields went away with a decision win over Herman. That was overturned to a no contest due to the drug test coming back positive. Shields was fined for the incident and handed a six month suspension. It is the first suspension for the former Strikeforce middleweight champion who now falls to 2-2 since joining the UFC in 2010.
Shields’ remains suspended until February. Herman heads over to Strikeforce and meets Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (16-3) on the promotion’s final event this Saturday, January 12.
