Dan Henderson (29-8) and Chael Sonnen (27-12-2) are teammates, but when it pertains to a title, Hendo said that it goes out the window. Sonnen recently moved up to Henderson’s weight class as a light heavyweight.
“We’re friends, but above all we fight now in the same category and therefore have the same goal,” said Henderson to TATAME. “Our friendship is more than a title and we are professional enough to let the rivalry be just inside the Octagon.”
Sonnen has a chance to win the light heavyweight championship when he challenges Jon Jones (17-1) in April. The two are coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
Henderson was set to meet Jones at UFC 151 before he was injured and that fight never materialized. At UFC 157, Henderson and Lyoto Machida (18-3) are set for the co-main event in a fight that may setup the next No. 1 contender.
Just like Henderson, Sonnen is open to fighting his friend if it involves UFC gold.
“It would be a different situation, but our profession in this type of situation is quite possible to happen,” said Henderson.
