Mike Chandler likes Bellator’s concept of earning championship shots through a tournament because it’s fair to everyone involved.
“The tournament based format is great,” said Chandler to MMA Interviews. “There’s no politics. You got eight guys who step into a cage and at the end of three months you got a guy who gets the opportunity to fight the champion.”
Chandler did just that by winning the Season 4 lightweight tournament. He went on defeat Eddie Alvarez to win the title in what Bellator has referred to as the fight of the year for 2011.
At Bellator 85, Chandler makes his first title defense against fellow tournament winner Rick Hawn. They will be the co-main event for the night.
“I just plan on going in a putting on a dominate performance and not leaving it to the judges,” said Chandler.
That show takes place January 17 from the Bren Events Center in Irvine, CA with a start time of 10 p.m. ET. It will mark Bellator’s debut on Spike TV.
