Jon Fitch knows what it takes to compete for the UFC title, having worked his way to a bout with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
After hitting a bit of a rough patch, Fitch (24-4-1) has rebounded from both defeat and injury, and is looking to make it two in a row when he faces Demian Maia at UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar in February.
However, the veteran of 17 UFC fights doesn’t see anything happening at the top of the 170-pound division in regards to St-Pierre’s reign. GSP is currently set to face Nick Diaz at UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz in March.
“I think right now it looks like GSP will probably defeat Diaz,” said Fitch, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “The way it looks, I think there’s a strong possibility the fight after that will probably be (Nate) Marquardt just because it’s champion vs. champion.”
Marquardt is currently the Strikeforce welterweight champion, and is set to defend his title for the first – and last – time on January 12 against Tarec Saffiedine at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine.
Fitch understands that he’ll likely need a lot to happen to secure a second meeting with St-Pierre, but for now, he said, “I’m not evening going to think about taking any kind of top-seed-type stuff for the whole 2013. I think that’s already booked, honestly.”
