Donald Cerrone On Gilbert Melendez Possibly Getting A Title Shot

Donald Cerrone (19-4-1 NC) is poised to be the lightweight champion and knows he’s only a fight away from possibly receiving the title shot. Another issue could be the pending arrival of Gilbert Melendez (21-2). If Cerrone must wait, he’s fine with that.

“The guy has been a champion for a while,” said Cerrone during a fan Q&A prior to the UFC 155 weigh-ins. “If Dana wants to give him a shot [so be it]. If they want to give him a fight before that, I’m game.”

Melendez serves as the current and final Strikeforce lightweight champion. He has held it twice and was the interim champion once. He has defended the pair of titles a record eight times. UFC president Dana White said that Melendez may challenge for the title in his first UFC appearance.

Cerrone next meets Anthony Pettis (15-2) at UFC on FOX 6. The card is January 26 from the United Center in Chicago, IL. They are expected to compete on the main card.
