Patrick Cote-Alessio Sakara Rematch Off For UFC 158

A planned rematch between Patrick Cote and Alessio Sakara has been cancelled just as quickly as it was made official. The two were scheduled for March’s UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz event from Montreal.

Recently, Cote earned a disqualification victory over Sakara, but the finish was controversial. It appeared no warning was given to Sakara for illegal strikes to the back of the head – the reason for the DQ – and Sakara had believed he won the fight when it was stopped.

An appeal to the Quebec commission was denied to have the fight changed to a no-contest by Sakara.

Now, according to Sakara, the rematch is off after the fighter found out he has issues with his kidneys.

“I cannot fight because of my kidneys,” Sakara told Fighters Only Magazine. “Three days ago I got some test results and the doctor has ordered that I stop everything for three months because of the renal (kidney) stress.”

Sakara said his manager is working with Cote and the UFC to get the bout rescheduled for a later date. It appears the kidney issue has come about due to weight-cutting that the fighter does to get down to 185 pounds for his fights.

It remains unknown if the UFC will find a new opponent for Cote, or if they will just wait to schedule the match with Sakara for a later date.
