The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale: Live Coverage, Results

Tonight’s fight card comes to us live from the the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The preliminary card will air live on Facebook and Fuel TV, while the main card airs on FX.

The opening bout on the Facebook card features flyweights Jared Papazian (14-8-1 NC) vs. Tim Elliott (8-3-1).

Round 1: Elliot takes him down early and has a standing guillotine. There up and both fight at the center of the Octagon on the ground. Elliot on top and is passing the guard. Elliot with another choke, but is out. Papazian hits Elliott with an accidental knee to a downed opponent while he was in momentum. Elliott is hurt bad and the referee stops in for the doctor to look at him. Doctor allows it to continue a few minutes later. Elliot with a big left and is using ground and pound. They’re up against the cage and a big knee by Papazian. They swing at the center of the cage and are back against the cage. Round ends

Round 2: They circle each other at the center of the Octagon trading punches. Elliot takes him down and has side control. Several short elbows and Papazian is bleeding from the nose badly. They’re up and huge right handed uppercut by Papazian. Elliot has him against the cage standing. Double kick with a punch by Elliot. Elliot looking for a spinning elbow or fist. Another uppercut by Papazian followed with a few shots. Elliot misses a head kick. Elliot can’t get the takedown. They trade blows and Elliot gets the takedown in the center as the round ends.

Round 3: Elliot tries for another guillotine, but doesn’t have it. They’re on the ground and Elliot is going for the leg as Papazian punches his head. The referee stands them up. Big shot by Elliot and he’s on top throwing punches. Elliott has his back and connects with several shots to the side of the head. Papazian is bleeding everywhere. Elliot still has the back and is looking for the choke. He has the choke, but let’s go. He still has the back as Papazian tries to rollout, but can’t as the round ends.

The lightweights are up next with Mike Rio (8-1) vs. John Cofer (7-2).

Round 1: Rio using the cage as he looks for leverage against Cofer. Back at the center and a kick to the leg by Rio. Cofer with big two shots and Rio is hurt. He charges in and Cofer has him against the cage. In the center again and Cofer misses a high spinning leg kick. Cofer puts him on the ground and hits two big left hands. Rio flips him and is on top now. Rio has full guard and nice elbow by Rio from his back. Rio looks for the leg from his back as the round ends.

Round 2: They’re trading punches and Rio with a big slam into side control. Cofer looking for a submission and stands instead. Rio remains on the ground until the referee stands him up. Some punches and knee by Rio to the head of Cofer. Rio hits a left and takes him to the ground with a full mount. Rio has the back of Cofer as he stands. Still has the back, but can’t get the submission locked in. They’re on the ground as the round ends.

Round 3: They trade blows at the start of the round. Rio takes him to the ground and is on top. Cofer has the wrist and is looking for the triangle choke. Rio gets out of it. They’re still on the ground and Cofer is looking or the leg, but can’t get it. Rio has side control and hits some elbows to the body. Rio has the arm and is looking for the submission with two minutes to go. Cofer is out, but Rio is not letting him stand. Rio goes for the armbar again and has it this time. It’s all over.

The final Facebook fight has bantamweight action with Reuben Duran (8-3-1) vs. Hugo Viana (6-0).

Round 1: Big right hand by Viana after taking a shot early on. Another shot by Viana and Duran is down. Viana jumps on top, but Duran is up after taking several shots. Another big punch by Viana and Duran almost falls from it. Duran is up and has him against the cage. Viana switches and now Duran is against the cage. Duran pushes him off. They’re standing and Viana keeps Duran on the outside. Viana hits another right hand to end this one with just under a minute to go.

The opening preliminary fight on Fuel TV sees welterweights TJ Waldburger (15-7) vs. Nick Catone (9-3).

Round 1: They slap hands to start the fight. Waldburger has Catone against the cage. Catone reverses and back to the center of the Octagon. Catone with a front headlock on the ground. Waldburger now has the back. He stands and wrestles this one against the cage. Catone flips him to the ground. Waldburger is able to stand. Catone grabs him and puts him against the cage again. Waldburger looking for the kimura as they go to the ground. They’re battling on the ground for position as the round ends.

Round 2: Big high kick by Catone. Catone charges and Waldburger catches him coming in with a triangle choke on the ground. Waldburger with repeated elbows to the head and Catone can’t escape as the triangle choke is locked in tight. Catone passes out.

The lightweights are up next with Vinc Pichel (7-0) vs. Rustam Khabilov (14-1).

Round 1: They pound gloves to start this one. Khabilov goes for the takedown and gets it. Khabilov has the back as they stand and connects with a huge suplex. He hits another one that puts Pichel on back of his neck. A third suplex by Khabilov and Pichel is out cold already as Khabilov connects with several rights before the referee steps in.

It was just announced that Melvin Guillard (30-11-2-1 NC) vs. Jamie Varner (20-7-1-2 NC) on the main card has been cancelled. Varner became ill backstage.

Another bantamweight contest is next with Johnny Bedford (18-9-1) vs. Marcos Vinicius (20-3-1).

Round 1: They feel each other out and Bedford charges Vinicius who catches him with a guillotine choke on the ground. Bedford is out of the hold and is on top now. Bedford in side control on the ground. Bedford decides to stand, so does Vinicius. Bedford on the inside and Vinicius is on the outside. Powerful right hand by Bedford and starts ground and pound. Vinicius is up. The round ends as they trade blows.

Round 2: Low kick by Vinicius early that hits Bedford in the groin. The fight is paused. They slap hands as we continue. Spinning kick by Vinicius that doesn’t connect. Bedford puts him against the cage and connects with a straight right hand that puts Vinicius on the ground against the cage. Bedford with a legal kick to the body and jumps on top of Vinicius with repeated punches. Referee steps in to end it.

The final preliminary fight of the night has welterweights Mike Pyle (23-8-1) vs. James Head (9-2).

Round 1: They touch gloves. Head charges and puts Pyle against the cage. He hits some big shots to the head. Pyle counters with his own shot to the head. Pyle with the clinch and two big knee shots to the head. Head is on the ground against the cage and Pyle connects with a left hand and several rights as this one is over.

The first fight on the main card sees featherweights Dustin Poirier (12-2) vs. Jonathan Brookins (13-5).

Round 1: They touch gloves. Brookins with a big right hand. He has Poirier against the cage and is teeing off, but Brookins is swinging back. Poirier has the back. He lets go. Brookins has him against the cage again and connects with some punches. Back at the center of the Octagon and a right hook by Poirier. Brookins grabs a leg and pushes him against the cage. Poirier powers out of it. Some shots to the head by Poirier and he looks to take control on the cage. Brookins looks to go to the ground and Piorier catches him in a choke. He locks in the D’arce choke and Brookins taps quickly.

The heavyweights make their first appearance tonight with Pat Barry (7-5) vs. Shane del Rosario (11-1).

Round 1: They slap hands. Rosario with a kick to the stomach followed by another one. Rosario charges and connects with some knees to the head and gut as he pushes this fight against the cage. Barry looks for a neck crank, but doesn’t get it. They’re back to the center of the Octagon. Rosario shoots in and gets it. Rosario has the back and is looking for the choke, but Barry is out of it. Rosario has the arm on the ground now. He lets go of it and Barry is on top as the round ends.

Round 2: They touch gloves again. As they trade punches, a huge left hand by Barry that rocks a wobbly Rosario against the cage. Barry with some shots to the head and a big right that puts Rosario on the ground as the referee jumps in.

The co-main event is up as it’s Colton Smith (3-1) vs. Mike Ricci (7-2), with the winner becoming The Ultimate Fighter welterweight winner of the 16th season.

Round 1: TUF finalist touch gloves as the fight starts. Smith with a quick takedown and starts with hammer fist to Ricci’s head. Smith is up and looks for the back. He gets it and flattens Ricci out. He’s sitting Indian style with his legs wrapped around Ricci’s body. Smith is looking for a choke, but can’t get it. They’re back up. Smith grabs the leg and takes this down to the mat again. Some knee to the chest as the round ends.

Round 2: They touch gloves. Confusing spot early where Smith clearly hits Ricci in the groin. The referee does nothing and Smith charges in as Ricci grabs his groin in pain. Ricci is pissed at Steve Mazzagatti and Smith looks like he didn’t know about the shot to the groin. Smith puts Ricci’s back against the cage as they’re on the ground. Smith has the back of Ricci again like in the previous round and is looking for the submission again. He doesn’t get it and the round ends.

Round 3: Smith charges at Ricci and takes him down against the cage. They’re in the same spot as the last two rounds and the crowd starts booing a little. Smith looks for the submission, but can’t lock it in. They roll across the mat a few times as Ricci tries to escape. Ricci has his hands up to block the submission from Smith who keeps trying for it. Ricci gets out with a spin and is on top and he needs to stop this if he wants to win. He hooks both legs in with 30 seconds left. Smith tries to stand and can’t. Armbar by Ricci as the clock is down to 15 seconds. Smith is out and is on top as the fight ends.

Colton Smith defeated Mike Ricci via unanimous decision

It’s main event time with heavyweights Roy Nelson (17-7) vs. Matt Mitrione (5-1).

Round 1: Nelson misses early with a few strikes. Mitrione is trying to avoid strikes from Nelson. Nice pair of high leg kicks by Mitrione. They grapple up against the cage and Mitrione looks to have the advantage. Nelson is swinging away and Mitrione’s mouthpiece falls out. The referee, Herb Dean, doesn’t step in to pause this one as they are both throwing punches. Nelson with an uppercut that sends Mitrione falling back to the ground against the cage and he pounds away until the referee steps in. Mitrione never even got the chance to put his mouthpiece back in.

Roy Nelson defeated Matt Mitrione via TKO (punches) at 2:58 of round 1
