UFC president Dana White has tried to push some fighters into retirement following devastating knockout losses. Former UFC champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will not be given that same speech by White.
Rua was defeated by Alexander Gustafsson recently at UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz, dropping him out of the running for a title shot. Rua had turned down a short notice bout with current champ Jon Jones earlier this year after defeating Brandon Vera.
“He always comes to fight, he’s tough as nails and I’ve got a lot of respect for him,” said White, during the Fuel TV post-fight show. “(His future is) up to him.”
Rua is just 31 years old and sports an overall mark of 21-7. He has been competing inside the cage since 2002 and has battled several injuries as of late. The loss was Rua’s third since 2011.
