Alexander Gubstafsson (15-1) left the Octagon victorious over Maurício “Shogun” Rua (21-7), but many questioned how many times the Sweden was holding the cage during the fight and never received a warning from the referee.
When asked about it post-fight, Gustafsson wasn’t even aware as he was focused on Rua.
“I don’t even remember that part,” said Gustafsson to MMA Heat. “A fight is a fight. What can I say?”
The fight was labeled as a No. 1 contender bout for the light heavyweight championship, but Gustafsson may find himself in action sooner. The current champion Jon Jones (17-1) takes on Chael Sonnen (27-12-1) in April, meaning Gustafsson would have to wait until the summer at the earliest to fight again. Gustafsson said he would rather fight then sit on the sidelines for so long.
