One-Handed Nick Newell Wins Gold, Seeks Out The UFC

Nick Newell (9-0) is now not only a one handed fighter, but a champion as well. At XFC 21, Newell won the lightweight championship from former Bellator competitor Eric Reynolds (16-6).

Newell’s coach Jeremy Libiszewski thinks the win will prove that his student is a dangerous threat.

“I think at first people thought of him as a sideshow,” said to MMA Junkie. “Now they’re going, ‘Well, he’s good, but I don’t think he’s that good.’ It’s one of those things where, the same reason he gets attention is the same reason why he doesn’t get respect.”

The undefeated Newell has finished eight of his nine opponents in the first round, including the most recent that led to gold. The other win was via decision.

“My goal when I started was never to be the one-handed fighter,” said Newell. “My goal is to be the best in the world.”

When Newell was asked if he was ready for the UFC, he said absolutely. Over the summer, Dana White was asked about Newell who he wasn’t familiar with him. It was that same interview when White said, “The UFC’s tough enough with two arms.”
