Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is currently negotiating to become a member of the UFC’s roster. However, where Melendez competes could be decided on Saturday night.
Nate Diaz, a teammate of Melendez under the watchful eye of Cesar Gracie, will attempt to secure the UFC 155-pound title from Benson Henderson in the main event of UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz. If Diaz does that, “El Nino” will likely drop to featherweight.
While this has been widely-speculated since the impending closure of Strikeforce was made apparent, Gracie confirmed the possible plans to MMAjunkie.com on Wednesday while preparing Diaz for Henderson.
Diaz added that he could move to to welterweight if unsuccessful vs. Henderson, adding, “and Gilbert Melendez is going to be the champion for sure.”
Gracie said talks between Melendez and the UFC are in the infant stages and that the fighter is still recovering from a shoulder injury.
