UFC officials have made a heavyweight contest between Alistair Overeem and Antonio Silva official for UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar, pending Overeem’s license approval by the Nevada Athletic Commission. The card takes place February 2, while Overeem will be eligible to seek his license in late December.
Overeem, a former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, was suspended earlier this year after failing a pre-fight drug test. He was scheduled to meet Junior dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight title at that time.
Silva, meanwhile, earned his first UFC victory by stopping Travis Browne. He was defeated in his Octagon debut by Cain Velasquez.
The main event of UFC 156 features UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo defending his title against Frankie Edgar, while light heavyweights Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and welterweights Jon Fitch and Demian Maia have also been confirmed for the card.
“Our fights on Super Bowl weekend are always some of the biggest and best, and this year will be no different,” UFC president Dana White said.
