If Alexander Gustafsson (14-1) wants to defeat the former UFC light heavyweight champion Maurício “Shogun” Rua (21-6), he needs to avoid a ground game. This according to jiu-jitsu black belt Leo Nogueira, who has been working with the Brazilian.
“If the fight goes to the Swedish ground, I’m sure he’ll finish,” said Nogueira to TATAME. “The submissions are very cleared him.”
Nogueira trained with Rua for about a week and a half. Training has stopped has Nogueira has a jiu-jitsu match next week. Following that, the two will resume training.
Since Rua dropped the light heavyweight championship, he is 2-1. He has yet to start any kind of winning streak. Gustafsson is 7-1 for the UFC and is on a five fight win streak.
“His ground game is already great,” said Nogueira. “I can say that I only improved his jiu-jitsu because the ground part of it was already very good.”
Rua vs. Gustafsson will be the co-main event of UFC on FOX 5. The December 8 show comes out of the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington.
